Tea Ceremony

What happens in a traditional tea ceremony?

A traditional tea ceremony is a ritualistic practice focused on deeply appreciating the quality of tea, often involving specific steps for brewing and serving, while also incorporating elements of mindfulness and respect for the tea itself and the act of sharing it with others; it is typically a smaller gathering where the host carefully prepares and presents the tea, often explaining the tea's origin and characteristics, allowing everyone to savor the experience fully.

Tea Room Protocol

Tea selection:

The host chooses a high-quality tea, often a specific type like oolong, pu-erh, or green tea, based on the desired flavor profile and brewing method.

Preparation ritual:

The tea is carefully measured and placed in a teapot, with hot water being poured over it in a precise manner, allowing for optimal steeping.

Serving etiquette:

The tea is usually poured into small cups and offered to guests in a specific order, often starting with the most senior person present.

Mindful appreciation:

Guests are encouraged to observe the appearance of the tea, smell its aroma, and savor the taste slowly, focusing on the full sensory experience.

Conversation and connection:

The tea ceremony can be a space for thoughtful conversation, sharing stories, and building connection with those present.
